Common questions

The camera will not scan a book

Point the camera at the barcode on the back of the book, not the one on the inside cover. Give it good light and hold roughly 15–20 cm away.

Many older books have no barcode at all. Tap Enter ISBN manually and type the 10 or 13 digit number — usually found on the copyright page near the front.

It says "no price data" for my book

This means there are too few current listings for that title to give an honest estimate. We would rather tell you we do not know than invent a number you might spend money on.

It can also mean the pricing service was briefly unreachable. The book is still saved to your collection — rescan it later and the price may fill in.

The book was not found at all

We look books up in Open Library and Google Books. Very old, self-published, or obscure titles are sometimes in neither. Double-check the ISBN digits if you typed them in.

I paid but the app still shows the paywall

Open Settings → Restore purchases. This happens most often after reinstalling the app or moving to a new phone.

Restoring only works on the same Apple ID that bought the subscription. If you used a different Apple ID, sign back into that one and try again.

How do I cancel my subscription?

Subscriptions are managed by Apple, not by us. On your iPhone open Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions, choose Bookworth and tap Cancel. You keep access until the end of the period you have already paid for.

For refunds, contact Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com — we cannot issue refunds for App Store purchases.

How accurate are the prices?

They are estimates built from current third-party online listings, and we show how many listings each estimate is based on so you can judge its weight. Actual selling prices vary with condition, edition, timing and luck.

The buy-or-leave verdict assumes typical marketplace fees, Royal Mail postage, and a £2 purchase price. You can see those assumptions in Settings. They are deliberately conservative — we would rather understate a profit than talk you into a bad buy.

Where is my scan history stored?

Only on your phone. There is no account and nothing is uploaded. That also means it does not sync between devices, and deleting the app deletes the history.

You can erase it yourself at any time via Settings → Clear my collection.

Do you see the photos I take?

No. Camera frames are decoded on your device to read the barcode number and are never uploaded, saved, or transmitted. Only the resulting ISBN leaves your phone.

Report a problem or suggest a feature

Email support@bookworth.co.uk. If you are reporting a bug, it helps enormously to include your iPhone model, your iOS version, and the ISBN of the book you were scanning.
